    The official Feast history says the event was founded in 1915 by four Madeiran immigrant men who wanted to recreate the religious festivals of their home island in New Bedford.

    Over time the grounds expanded into Madeira Field and surrounding streets, while the feast grew into a major regional cultural event tied closely to New Bedford's Madeiran community.
