Some of the largest Portuguese-American festivals include the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in New Bedford, Massachusetts (promoted as the largest Portuguese feast in the world), Portugal Day Newark in New Jersey's Ironbound, and long-running Holy Ghost festas in California, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
Most Portuguese festas in the US take place between late spring and early fall. Portugal Day celebrations cluster around June 10, Holy Ghost (Espírito Santo) festas often fall around Pentecost and through the summer, and many community festivals run from June through early September.
A Holy Ghost festa (Festa do Espírito Santo) is a traditional Azorean and Madeiran celebration of the Holy Spirit. It typically includes a religious procession, a crowning ceremony, communal meals such as sopas, and days of music, food, and community programming.
